Tajikistan

- We've worked in Tajikistan since 2007, partnering local organisations and the government to cut poverty and social exclusion among older people.
- We empower older people to play an active role in local development and political decision-making.
- We also work to reduce older people's vulnerability to Tajikistan's extremely cold winters.
The difference we made in 2009-10
- We've set up three social clubs in Dushanbe, which reach more than 1,000 older people. The social clubs have been expanded into active centres providing advice, support and training to older people.
- Also in Dushanbe, 10 self-help groups, run by older people themselves organise and participate in activities such as visiting housebound older people. They also run income-generating activities such as selling home grown produce and bakery and craft products.
- More than 500 older people received hot soup each week during the winter of 2009.
What next?
- We now aim to help 1,200 older people prepare for emergencies.
- 30 greenhouses will be built to increase local food production and reduce household spending on food.
- Older people's groups will lobby to ensure very vulnerable households get access to basic social welfare and health services.
