Kyrgyzstan

Since 2003 we've worked closely with local partners on older people's issues, aiming to:

  • bring about universal pensions
  • fight for policy and legislation to end discrimination and abuse against older people
  • gain better access to healthcare for older people
  • increase the recognition of older people's specific needs in emergencies - for instance during Kyrgyzstan's extreme winters.

The difference we made in 2009-10

  • We've worked with 53 communities across Kyrgyzstan, improving the lives of over 5,000 older people, 4,500 children and 6,750 multi-generational households.
  • Thanks to our influence, the Ministry of Emergency Situations will now include older people's needs in its policies and initiatives.
  • We've helped Older People's Groups tackle social exclusion and poverty through home visits,  home clubs and supporting other similar projects.
  • We have been part of an innovative scheme to develop a police force dedicated to meeting the needs of older people.

What next?

  • We will campaign for a universal pension.
  • We will help older people monitor what's going on in their communities to stop abuse and discrimination.

We will work to support 2,500 older people caught up in violent conflict in June 2010. We will use emergency funding for a range of measures including distributing essential items and cash grants.
