Jamaica

In Jamaica, we help older people through education, campaigning and our Sponsor a Grandparent program (SAG).
Working with partners, we train older people to be prepared in emergency situations.
We also help them claim pensions and healthcare, as well as offering financial grants to older people wanting to set up their own business.
The difference we made in 2009-10
- We helped to relieve poverty in multigenerational households. For instance, we helped older people claim benefits and discounts on medication. The number of National Health Fund members, a subsidised drug scheme, grew by 20% from 2007 to 2008.
- We gave food packages, medical checks and financial help to older people through our Sponsor A Grandparent scheme.
- Older people have gained from the appointment of older citizen monitors who are trained to help peers with mobility or health problems.
What next?
- We will help multi-generational households affected by migration by giving them better access to benefits.
- We will help 7,500 people by improving policies and programmes that affect migrants.
